Origin & History of Mother’s Day Celebration

Greeks celebrated the occasion to honor Rhea (mother of the Gods). Mother’s day history also traces in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated. But a modern celebration of mother day attributes to two women of US — Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis.

Julia Ward Howe suggested that June 2 be annually celebrated as Mothers Day. She is also famed for her famous Civil War song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. She made an appeal to women and raised them against Mothers Day Proclamation,. It was written in Boston in 1872. She made a lot of efforts for mother day to be celebrated officially.

Anna Jarvis is known as the Founder of Mothers Day in the US.  Anna Jarvis never married. She is also known as the Mother of Mothers. She worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers.
Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood. She vowed that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them.

When her mother died in 1905, she resolved to fulfill her mother’s desire of having a mother’s day. She sends carnations (a flower) in the church service. She felt that they symbolized a mother’s true love. Later, Anna along with her supporters made a struggle for an official declaration of Mothers Day holiday. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held Mother’s Day celebration in the memory of her mother.

By 1911, Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in almost every state in the US. On May 8, 1914, a Joint Resolution was signed by President Woodrow Wilson designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then. Today Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries.  Millions of people over the world take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers. Thanks to them for their efforts.

What are mothers

Mother is a great person in our life without her we cannot imagine to have existed in this world. She is the person who makes our life so simple and easy with her caring love and support. A mother is a person who wipes your tears and always takes your side. Mother is always our very close and the best friend. Mothers are the emotional backbones of the family. And most of all, a mother is the person who always LOVES you no matter what you may have done. A mother’s smile toward you makes all day happy. A mother heart is like a rare jewel. Note that, all mothers are not same but all mothers love their children and want to see them happy.

Mothers have defined as per relation as…

To an infant/ tot – mother is the center of the universe.

To a teenager – mother is halter (balancer)

To a young adult – mother is loving but too old-fashioned

To a young mom – mother is the best friend

The real meaning is understood only when you become a mom and it is difficult to capture the definition in words. You will just know when you become one. Mother is a great and unique gift for us from God. We should be friendly with mothers. We should respect her. Mother prayers always make us a successful and happy person.
