Julia Ward Howe suggested that June 2 be annually celebrated as Mothers Day. She is also famed for her famous Civil War song, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. She made an appeal to women and raised them against Mothers Day Proclamation,. It was written in Boston in 1872. She made a lot of efforts for mother day to be celebrated officially.
Anna Jarvis is known as the Founder of Mothers Day in the US. Anna Jarvis never married. She is also known as the Mother of Mothers. She worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers.
Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood. She vowed that someday someone must honor all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them.
When her mother died in 1905, she resolved to fulfill her mother’s desire of having a mother’s day. She sends carnations (a flower) in the church service. She felt that they symbolized a mother’s true love. Later, Anna along with her supporters made a struggle for an official declaration of Mothers Day holiday. In 1907, Anna Jarvis held Mother’s Day celebration in the memory of her mother.
By 1911, Mother’s Day began to be celebrated in almost every state in the US. On May 8, 1914, a Joint Resolution was signed by President Woodrow Wilson designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries. Mother’s Day has grown increasingly popular since then. Today Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries. Millions of people over the world take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers.
